pumped up kicks

23 Aug

All the other kids with the pumped up kicks
You’d better run, better run, outrun my gun

if you haven’t guessed by now, this post is about sneakers- more specifically, the 2012 holy grail of shoes: the wedge sneaker!
of course by now everybody knows the designer that started it all, isabel marant. her willow sneakers come in many different colors, and have taken the fashion world by storm!
honestly, when the trend started i really hated the look of these shoes. maybe it’s the velcro straps that make them look like orthopaedic children’s booties- i don’t know, it just didn’t convince me.

and it still doesn’t. by now though, i’ve warmed up to the concept of the wedge sneaker, and -thank the fashion gods- numerous designers followed suit. so it’s been a while that i was on the lookout for the perfect wedge sneaker (which i decided, for me should be with laces, and maybe a top strap- but not necessarily), and found myself browsing innumerous online shops and catalogs. until i stumbled upon the nike website. i was like, what? why did the search bring me to the nike store? because of these babies:

nike dunk sky hi

i died and went to shoe heaven, because these are exactly what i was looking for! i don’t have to tell you how fast my fingers clicked on the “view item” button, right?
the dunk sky hi come in two colors (as far as austria or europe goes, i’ve seen some very colorful ones on google though), and just look so effortlessly casual, that they just might pass for regular nike kicks!
i wasn’t convinced with the navy-white combo (so. much. white.) so i bought the gray-white ones.
when they arrived, i was so happy that i wore them around the house, just for fun (no one has to know i was in my pj’s). i wore them to the office a couple of times, and took them with me to copenhagen as well, they are just really really comfy! here is a pic of my darling kicks- i will wear the hell out of these!

you probably noticed that the first couple of outfits are a bit warmer- yeah well the crazy european weather was rather fresh two weeks ago, then did a complete 180 and temperatures shot up to 36°C, which are still the current temperatures.
what do you like to put on when it’s too hot to wear clothes at all?

ridiculously idyllic!

18 Jun

hello lovelies!

i’m writing you from quaint little eugendorf by salzburg! i know, i had no idea about this place either, and i’m not here by choice…
i was dragged here because of a convention at which my whole (work) team is presenting, and yours truly is freakin’ moderating the discussion!
we actually just finished our second round of rehearsals, and it’s not going too bad!

needless to say i wasn’t thrilled to be attending, but the surrounding environment is reaaaally making up for it! take a look at this freakishly sound-of-music idyllic view!

hotel gastagwirt is where we’re at- it’s so ridiculously cute and folksy and all-things-heidi that i seriously expect a little white goat to merrily saunter into the conference space.

there are about 10 golf greens in the area, horsebackriding opportunities, hiking and biking trails, and the food is amazing!
i have to get back to rehearsing now, but i just wanted to let you partake in my austrian-folk- extravaganza.

toodles!
ps: got confirmation from my brother that the internet at home is up and running!

bratislava and big apple red

25 May

last weekend i was in bratislava visiting my best friend.  we were so lucky with the weather, it was gorgeous!

the main reason i went is the nightlife. not for nothing bratislava is dubbed partyslava– the alcohol and entrances are so cheap! the city is crawling with international people (many big international companies have their european hq in slovakia), but everywhere you go you mainly hear british english. thanks to ryanair and their airfares, bratislava is a super popular place for bachelor/ette parties (as the brits call them: stag and hen nights).

we went to about 4 places on friday night, and ended up at trafo, a fun and crazy club right in the city center. we were home around 4 in the morning, and when we woke up at 1 pm on saturday, we were both nursing a slight hangover. my bff suggested we go chill in the sun, and drink some lemonade (very popular) at leblon, a brazilian churrascaria right by the river. i had lemonade joe, a deliciously refreshing lemonade with cucumber slices, elderflower syrup, limes and soda.

we then walked around town, and ended up strolling by the blue church– or as we call it, the disney church:

by sunday our nails were a mess, so we went to get them done. i fell in love with opi big apple red! such a striking red shade with fuchsia undertones- the perfect red for summer! needless to say, i wanted to get it. when i got back to vienna i looked online for it, and because i was curious about the much acclaimed seche vite i was browsing for that too. i stumbled upon micky nail studio, a new store in vienna that also has an online shop. what makes micky nail studio special is that not only do they carry most collections of opi, they also stock essie, china glaze, seche vite, orly and zoya! if that wasn’t enough, opi and essie are cheaper there than anywhere else i’ve seen. before i knew it, my fingers started clicking, and i checked out a basket of 5 nailpolishes. it happens, right? when the haul arrives, you’ll know it :)

musings

14 Mar

i’ve added a new category: musings and daydreams.
it seemed appropriate, as i didn’t really know in which category i could put random thoughts, brainfarts, general wonderings and all the other things that whirl through my mind.

at the moment i’m constantly followed by some sort of restlessness… which expands into (day)dreams and a desire to make a change. it is now my 6th year in vienna, and i love it. i mentioned in an earlier post that to me, vienna is the most beautiful city in the world. i live in a great apartment with three cats and my brother. our parents visit us often, i have a great group of friends- honestly, i’m very happy with my life.
then why do i keep getting this nagging feeling? this urge to move on, try something new, do something else?
it might be because i’m still jobless at the moment- granted, i could be looking for one alot harder, but still, the point is to find something i like (or would like) to do, not throwing myself into just anything… right?
maybe, and i think that is the actual problem, i don’t really know what i want to do. wow. when i first realised that, i was a little taken aback. if i don’t know what i want to do, who would?
i want to add that there is no lack of wishes and dreams as to what i would like to be doing. i think it’s quite the contrary, maybe there’s just too many things i want to try!
one of my life dreams is to work with animals, particularly horses and dogs… it is probably the one constant passion i’ve been carrying around my whole life. other things came and went, but this always stayed. in my mind, i would own a ranch, somewhere in montana -thanks to the horsewhisperer, that’s been the backdrop for this dream. or maybe somewhere in california would do too, with access to a nice secluded beach. my brain plays it out like this:

yeeehaaw into the sunset

then again, i have another very very different dream. the glitz and glamour of a career in fashion or the entertainment industry! that’s quite a change from the previous one, isn’t it? i think i’m on the right track about not knowing what i want…
having worked at a model agency, i got hands on experience with this fantastical world, and i’m hooked. i don’t care if it’s a shallow, exploitative industry- it’s fun and fast paced, and i like it!
now, sadly, in vienna this particular sector is veeeeery limited… it is bigger in paris, milan or london, but it doesn’t compare to the land of entertainers, the united states. would i be able and willing to move to the usa to pursue a career? cowgirl or showbiz? or is it better (safer?) to stay in good old europe and make the best of it?
the thing is, i would consider moving to denmark, too. for totally different reasons, but it would be an option! the people are so cool, the whole scandinavian culture is so different and relaxed, it almost feels like being out of europe. i used to say “the danish are the australians of europe”. i still stand by that. but then again, i loved australia! sydney and melbourne were such amazing places, i would love to move there too! again, different reasons than any of the ones above, it has a unique appeal!

see where the problem is? my (let’s face it raging) wanderlust has gotten me all confused! so many places, with such different characteristics and appeals! how could i make a decision? what would be the best thing to do? how do i determine what the best thing is? is it happiness? career? money? ideally it would be a mix of everything, but the existence of such an outcome seems quite utopic, no?

i would love to hear your thoughts about this :)

january sales steals!

17 Jan

i just came back from new york, the big apple, the concrete jungle where dreams are made- and i was overwhelmed!

it’s bigger, flashier, more glamorous and just much much more than i had expected in my wildest dreams!

needless to say, i splurged in the post-holiday sales, and i just managed to find space for my new things in my (already overflowing) closet… in the next couple of days, i’ll post pictures of my bargains, which included Hervé Leger dresses, Stuart Weitzman ballerinas, and other goodies, that are so much more expensive in europe!

on my second and third day back, just to get adjusted and overcome my jetlag, i went shopping! the end of year sale was still on, and even if it wasn’t as fresh, i still managed to find a couple of steals!

the first stop was my beloved h&m, at which i found a casual navy racerback tank dress for 1(!!!) euro, a white t-shirt to add to my basics collection… the two items i am most happy about are a beautifully colored denim shirt (i was looking for a nice one since i read Karen’s blog post), and a checkered flannel shirt from the men’s section (think abercrombie meets europe)

next stop was mango… the thing with mango, is that sometimes i find really great stuff, but other times, i really have a hard time even liking their things… i don’t know if i’m the only one with this problem- somewhat strange! in any case, this time i was lucky in finding beautiful beige suede ballerinas with black leather details, for an absolute steal!

my last destination for the day was zara! i absolutely love love love zara… i could seriously always find something there, be it just a top, shoes or a pair of pants- zara consistently delivers! i had to really control myself not to grab things left and right, and focus on what i need or don’t have… as if! my conquest was of course shoes! fabulous patent leather nude platform sandals with gold details, and black textured leather ballerinas – probably the 23rd pair in my closet :)

there, so these are my january sales steals in vienna! i should really stop buying shoes, but it’s like an addiction! i’ll take a picture of my shoe closet for you guys- you’ll know what i mean by addiction :) it’s just that i can’t resist beautiful footwear, and it’s not like i don’t get good use out of them! i made a rule a couple of years ago, not to buy shoes that don’t fit properly… “they will stretch”, “get softer” etc, are all excuses, because deep down, we know they won’t stretch or soften that much to make them comfortable!
