low-fat wholewheat oat apricot muffins

30 Aug

yesterday i was grabbed by the urge to bake something.  i was also craving apricots for the longest time. so i put the two together. 2 birds one stone thing, you know?

i scoured my fridge for possible ingredients (i like to freestyle when i cook or bake, twist some recipes and personalize them), and found i still had some buttermilk, from when i made red velvet cupcakes for a friend’s birthday party.
so i googled “wholewheat buttermilk apricot muffins”, and was overwhelmed by the sheer amount of recipes and combinations out there. i opened the first 15, and decided to come up with my own.

now, i haven’t tried them yet (i forgot them at home- brain wasn’t awake yet), but i gave a few to my friends who were travelling today, and they told me the muffins were delicious!
i tweaked the recipes i found by using wholewheat and oats instead of regular “white” flour, and brown sugar instead of white. i also added a couple of spoons of apricot jam to the batter, to intensify the flavor.

ingredients:
– 1 cup chopped dried apricots                                        – 1/4 cup melted light butter
– 1 cup boiling water                                                             – 1/4 cup vegetable oil
– 1,5 cups wholewheat flour                                              – 1 cup buttermilk
– 1/2 cup oats                                                                          – 1 egg
– 3/4 cup brown sugar                                                         – 2 tbsp apricot jam
– 1 tsp baking soda
– 1/2 packet vanilla sugar (1,5 tsp)
– dash of salt

directions:
– preheat the oven to 190°C (about 400°F) and line muffin tray with paper cups.
– chop apricots and place in a bowl. pour the boiling water on them and let stand for 5 minutes.
– in a medium bowl, stir together the flour, oats, sugar, salt, baking soda and vanilla sugar.
– in a separate bowl mix the butter, oil, buttermilk and egg.
– slowly add the wet bowl to the dry ingredients, but dont overstir. add the jam and keep stirring.
– drain the apricots and add to the batter, make sure that they are evenly spread.
– fill the muffin cups and bake for about 17-20 minutes. test with a toothpick, if it comes out clean, they’re done.
– cool the muffins before removing them from the tray.

healthy, low-fat fruity muffins- enjoy!

brushed gold and pastel pink nails

29 Aug

hello lovelies!
so sorry for not being very active at the moment, i have lots to do at work, and as summer goes, it’s quite the busy social period…
but i wanted to show you two colors i’m sporting (well, one was last week):

1. brushed matte gold!
how cool does it look!?

this look is super easy to do: grab your favorite gold (or any metallic color for that matter), and paint two- three coats. it has to be opaque and well covering. then, you just apply a coat of matte top coat (i used essence matte coat, but i’m sure any one will do). i was really surprised how well it turned out, as the gold i used (catrice goldfinger) was very shiny and had lots of pigment. the result was very cool, a brushed matte gold effect- love it! (a bonus: the matte coat dries the nailpolish very quickly!)

2.  (i’m wearing it right now!) is pastel pink from my model’s own pastel collection. i had tried it before, and i really liked it because it achieved a very covering pastel shade- like candy! but this time, i enhanced the color by using a very simple trick… i remember reading somewhere, that if you apply a coat of white nail polish under pastels (or i guess any lighter) colors, it will make the color pop! well it makes sense, really… a white canvas gives a true color, while usually nails are not white… i was so pleased with the result, i’m really glad i tried it!

pre- cleanup… sorry!

the white coat was essie blanc, and as a top coat i used my trusty sèche vite. i don’t know how i used to do it without that stuff, it works like magic! as a base coat i use any clear nailpolish, at the moment my favorite is clear by rimmel- they have a very easy-to-use brush.

pumped up kicks

All the other kids with the pumped up kicks
You’d better run, better run, outrun my gun

if you haven’t guessed by now, this post is about sneakers- more specifically, the 2012 holy grail of shoes: the wedge sneaker!
of course by now everybody knows the designer that started it all, isabel marant. her willow sneakers come in many different colors, and have taken the fashion world by storm!
honestly, when the trend started i really hated the look of these shoes. maybe it’s the velcro straps that make them look like orthopaedic children’s booties- i don’t know, it just didn’t convince me.

and it still doesn’t. by now though, i’ve warmed up to the concept of the wedge sneaker, and -thank the fashion gods- numerous designers followed suit. so it’s been a while that i was on the lookout for the perfect wedge sneaker (which i decided, for me should be with laces, and maybe a top strap- but not necessarily), and found myself browsing innumerous online shops and catalogs. until i stumbled upon the nike website. i was like, what? why did the search bring me to the nike store? because of these babies:

nike dunk sky hi

i died and went to shoe heaven, because these are exactly what i was looking for! i don’t have to tell you how fast my fingers clicked on the “view item” button, right?
the dunk sky hi come in two colors (as far as austria or europe goes, i’ve seen some very colorful ones on google though), and just look so effortlessly casual, that they just might pass for regular nike kicks!
i wasn’t convinced with the navy-white combo (so. much. white.) so i bought the gray-white ones.
when they arrived, i was so happy that i wore them around the house, just for fun (no one has to know i was in my pj’s). i wore them to the office a couple of times, and took them with me to copenhagen as well, they are just really really comfy! here is a pic of my darling kicks- i will wear the hell out of these!

weekend trip!

17 Aug

hi lovelies!

i apologize for my silence during this week, it was a very hectic and fast couple of days…

i just want to tell you that as soon as i’m back from copenhagen, i will make it up to you with outfit, nail and baking posts!

ciao guys, see you soon!

bubblegum hair! or not?

9 Aug

hello lovelies!

hope everyone has been having a good week and that everyone is as excited as i am that tomorrow is friday!

since my brain is already on weekend mode, i’ve spent my morning browsing pinterest (which bytheway, i’ve just discovered! i know, i know, super late, but better than never!) and stumbled upon some amazing pictures of hairstyles.

now, my hair is relatively untouched- when i was twelve i sprayed sun-in one summer, but that’s as far as i ever got to altering my hair, until two years ago i’ve tried henna for the first time. i used the reddish one, and it gave my dark brown hair a beautiful mahogany-red shine. right now, i’m in the mood for change! i’d considered jumping on the ombre hair bandwagon before, but after seeing these pictures, i’m seriously thinking of doing it!

<3

it’s a beautiful and understated look (well ok, not the pink one), and would fit well in a “regular life” scenario. i doubt i would go to such a blonde shade though, probably more honey blonde than white-ish platinum.
i feel that if one doesn’t live in california, new york, london or melbourne, and/or isn’t an “it-girl” or a model, the pink hair might look a little odd- especially since i’m still working at a bank. maybe when i get a new, cooler job i’ll pink it up.

i would like to ask for your opinion, my lovely readers, and am asking you to vote in the below poll!
please help me decide what to do with my hair!
ps: if you don’t know how my mane looks like, you can see it here.

teeny wootd

4 Aug

hi lovelies!

i’ve just realised that it’s been ages that i’ve posted a work outfits of the days entry… i don’t know why, but i think because it’s been so warm, i really try to wear as little as possible, which sadly also means flipflops, very basic clothes and no accessories. not very exciting. not very worthy of being on the blog.
but i’ve found a couple of outfits on my phone, so i’ll give you these, along with a question: would single ootd or wootd entries directly from my phone be preferrable? easier?
i guess they would be faster and more direct for me, because i would just have to upload them from my phone as soon as i snap them. yes? should we give that a try?

here are the outfits:

t-shirt: asos
skirt: h&m
sandals: h&m

low luv horse leg necklace

t-shirt: asos white
jeans: h&m
sandals: wittner australia
necklace: low luv by erin wasson

*clubbing outfit* – i don’t go to work dressed like that :)

tank top: zara
shorts: versace for h&m (cruise collection)
