my quick hunger games trilogy review/rant

3 May

hello lovelies!

yesterday i finished the hunger games trilogy- it took me from saturday to wednesday to devour the three books (hence my lack of blog posts).
i really liked the first and the second books: the characters were well developed, the storyline (so) gripping, you really felt you were in the middle of the arena with katniss and peeta!

spoiler alert!- if you haven’t read the books yet and care about how the story goes on, you might want to stop reading.

the reunion with her mother, prim and gale was also very touching (i secretly rooted for katniss and gale), and i couldn’t wait to start the third part.

a few dozen pages into the book, even before the whole mockingjay figure is announced, you just know that she doesn’t really have a choice, and that of course she will be the face of the revolution. well that was a little weak… the first two books were a little harder to anticipate! (even though before the quarter quell was read out loud, you just knew that katniss was going back in the arena)
president coin rubbed me the wrong way since the beginning… something about her iciness and very strict hold on district 13 didn’t sit right with me. i do understand that a district needs a strong leader, but a little bit of compassion doesn’t hurt- even if you are not supposed to exist!

the thing that bothered me the most though, is in the last third of the book- why did so many of katniss’ team have to die? why did castor and finnick have to be destroyed by snow’s mutts? especially finnick, who’s character had been elaborately strung out, the many facets of his personality described- all so that in the end, katniss had to blow him up so that he wouldn’t have encountered cato’s fate?
the part that i had to re- read several times for clarification (i’m still a little confused though) is  right when prim dies, katniss loses her senses, right? she is drifting in and out of a dreamlike state, where she is singing, sees her father, etc.
next thing you know, the story goes on! what? where is the binding sentence or paragraph? i really had to read the few sentences over and over, to find the connection, the word that signals that katniss is awake and conscious… still haven’t really found it, but i just went with it because i was so close to the end, and wanted to know just how she will kill snow.

am i the only one that was bothered by this? did anyone else experience the same missing feeling? i would love to hear your thoughts on this!

all in all, it was a great read, beautifully written- i’m definitely going to the movies these days to catch the first part. can’t wait to see how they show rue, cato, foxface and the wolf muttations in action :)

I know what you mean, about Katniss’ dreamlike state, and the story suddenly continuing. The transitions between scenes were a bit blurry in several times throughout the series I thought, as Collins didn’t seem to use any breaks in the story apart from the chapters.
Personally (as horrible as this might sound), I liked the fact that a lot of the characters died in the last part of the book. It was horrible and downright brutal, but it was supposed to be warfare and all out revolution, and in real life that is how it happens. Killing off both Finnick and Prim may have been mean, but as they were two of the most pure characters, killing these two kind of hammers home the atrocities within the story that little bit harder. But I can see why these deaths upset or annoyed people. :)

oh i’m so glad i’m not the only one that was botheres by that!
i totally support your point of view, that by killing prim and finnick you eliminate the symbols of purity, thus not sugarcoating the war… maybe i was bothered by it because i might have had a teeny crush on finnick… maybe ;)
thanks for your comment and insights!

Hahaha, it’s true, a lot of people liked those characters so much, so it stung that little bit more when they did die. I nearly got a little bit teary when Prim died. I knew it was coming but it still shocked me, just how brutal it was. I do wonder how they’ll portray that in the last film…

I had the exact same thoughts! The things that annoyed me immensly were the fact Gale disappeared off the face of the planet, and the fact that Prim died! I didn’t even see the reason for killing her off, for the pure fact EVERY THING THAT HAD HAPPENED TO KATNISS WAS BECAUSE SHE WANTED TO PROTECT PRIM! Yet she still died! :( I wrote a post not long ago about The Hunger Games as well, and from the comments I received I think a lot of people agree it was a less than satifactory ending. The first and second books are fantastic, the third, not so much!

oh yeah, Gale disappearing, and katniss not caring at all- i mean ok, even if he orchestrated the bomb, it still isn’t his fault for them having used it on prim! so annoying!
i totally agree with you and the others, that as good as the first two parts were, the third just seemed a little lacking… which is very disappointing, since usually, the last part of a saga should be the most satisfying one (i’ll allow myself a twilight reference, but the last book is by far my favorite) ;)
      thanks for your comment!

Exactly! The end of a saga needs to go out with a bang rather than a flop! No worries love :) x

Haven’t read all the books, only book 1, but have you noticed that Katniss is continuously saved by men and never actually saves anyone else?

well… she does save peeta, but i think that’s about it, you’re right! if you read the second and third book, you’ll see how disappointing it is to see her lose that fiery streak that makes her special…
thanks for stopping by my blog!
